Welcome to the first post in our series exploring my upcoming book, Hidden Medicine. This very unique book challenges conventional views of illness and healing, offering a potentially revolutionary perspective on the intersection of medicine, spirituality, and unseen forces influencing our lives.

As a seasoned clinical psychiatrist and professor with over 28 years of experience, I reveal how illness often has spiritual roots that modern medicine overlooks. Drawing on my medical training and personal journey from skepticism to faith, I invite readers to consider the possibility of a hidden dimension to their struggles.

A Radical Perspective on Healing

The book begins with a provocative question: “Do you want to be healed?” This simple question is more profound than it seems at first glance.

Are you really fully committed to searching for complete and lasting healing, no matter where that search leads you or what others might say?

This inquiry sets the stage for a deeper exploration of the human condition, framed through the lens of body, soul, and spirit. In the book I share my own transformative experiences, first as an ardent intellectual skeptic and later

as a physician having developed a deep sense of faith, to illustrate that healing often requires addressing unseen spiritual realities as much as physical and mental symptoms.

The Problem with Conventional Medicine

Modern medicine, while adept at treating symptoms, often fails to address root causes—particularly when those causes are spiritual. I provide an overdue critique of the mainstream approach for its tendency to compartmentalize the human experience, neglecting the spiritual component that plays a crucial role in health and well-being.

Humans are tripartite beings, composed of body, soul, and spirit. In modern medicine, the biological processes of the body are emphasized, the soul is neglected, and the spirit is not even considered, having long been forgotten. But it was not always this way. To truly achieve holistic health and not simply the treatment of symptoms, the field of medicine needs to return to its roots grounded in spirituality.

A Personal Invitation

My desire to write this book was not a mere intellectual exercise for me—it’s deeply personal. I desire to share my knowledge of my most passionate intellectual pursuits, Medicine (psychiatry in particular) and spirituality.

A hodgepodge of notes and papers I had accumulated over the years received an unexpected spark last year that gave life to this book. A famous evangelical Christian pastor whom I respect greatly, John MacArthur, stated publicly several times last year that, “There’s no such thing as mental illness.” MacArthur seemingly took the other extreme from the one of mainstream medicine, which claimed all pathology could be explained through it’s biological underpinnings. MacArthur naively and erroneously asserted that all mental illness (and some physical illness) could be explained by the moral failings of its victims. A balance had to be sought in my opinion. The idea for Hidden Medicine was born.

In the book I share how I came from an initial stance of skepticism borne of intellectual snobbery to wholeheartedly embrace the reality of unseen spiritual forces, spiritual warfare, and the healing power of faith. My own journey from doubt to faith will hopefully serve as a powerful example for anyone grappling with the discouragement of treatment resistant illnesses or seeking a more holistic approach to health.
